Donald Trump is Brilliant!

I'm here to tell you, just like Barack Obama before him, Donald Trump is an absolute genius. He talked up a storm about draining the swamp, making America great again, and getting rid of thugs and rapists. I think it's all going to happen, but not nearly in the way he or his base expect. The bonus is, he still gets to take the credit when the smoke clears. As it was said in This is Spinal Tap, It's such a fine line between stupid and clever. Which side he's on doesn't matter, but I'll vote subversive and clever, because I'm a glass half-full kind of guy.

  • Drain the Swamp: His timing is impeccable. The face of America is changing, and it's becoming beige. Most of the good-ole boys in the House and Senate are on their way out due to age or incompetence, and we have an awakened electorate that realizes there is no way in hell it can just phone in their votes for some ho-hum candidate. Even in areas which are fairly centrist, the incumbent needs to bring their 'A' game. Our local rep and his opponent have spent more time knocking on doors and paying attention than I've seen in 13 years as a resident. In the interest of maintaining checks and balances, Congress will quit pandering to its fringe-y nut jobs on the left and right and head to where most of us live our lives; the middle. Swamp, drained. Trump, hero. Bringing Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court would be pretty awesome, but you can't have everything...
  • MAGA: Well, from what I saw when I ran a Ragnar Relay race through Trump country, I'm not 100% sure how this is going to pan out. Coal isn't coming back anytime soon, and those factory towns are exactly that, factory towns. No factory, no town, unless you can reinvent yourself, which is completely possible in the land of amazing second acts. Where I think America will become greater post-Trump is giving all Americans a seat at the table in figuring out what our future looks like. The recent events in Charlottesville demonstrate that every single one of us has some work to do getting to know the people we don't understand. For me, this is the alt-right. For you, it may be a Muslim, your neighbor from Ghana, or a rabid NASCAR fan. In all seriousness, if we don't get to know our neighbors, we're really short-changing ourselves as human beings and good old fashioned, in-your-face, why-do-we-always-overshare Americans. America, great again. Trump, hero. Fixing greatly gerrymandered voting districts would be cool, but we can't have everything...
  • Thugs and Rapists: A real man uses bad-ass phrases like Law and Order, Thugs and Rapists, and Bring Back Coal (even in an era of insanely cheap natural gas). I use phrases like Tone and Timbre, don't believe everything you see on TV, and 'run the numbers'. For what it's worth, crime is at historic lows, unemployment is really low (if you live in an area with no jobs, we have plenty around the country- cowboy up and start your new life!), and life is pretty good, especially compared to the 'malaise years' of the '70s. Run the numbers! Is it bad in some areas? Absolutely. Don't like your life? Scrape up a hundred bucks and start a new one. All we have to do is talk about how good things actually are and POTUS is a hero without lifting a finger. Doom and gloom of inauguration speech, forgotten. Trump, hero. Now let's spend that Mexican wall money on anti-racism efforts and make America great again.

Even as a kid, this picture cracked me up
